Obsidian Manufacturing was founded with a clear focus: to build better display cases. Drawing on experience in the display case industry and a background in engineering and fabrication, the company began by taking on custom projects that required a higher level of precision and attention to detail than what was commonly available.
In the early years, the focus was on glass-to-glass display cases, refining techniques and processes to improve both the quality and consistency of these builds. As demand grew, so did the scope of work, expanding into full custom millwork, retail fixtures, and museum exhibits.
Over time, Obsidian Manufacturing developed additional product lines to better serve different needs, from fully custom builds to more standardized and modular systems. While the offerings have grown, the approach has remained the same: thoughtful design, solid construction, and a commitment to building display solutions that last. The Obsidian story began with a focus on the specialized requirements of the museum sector, a world where display cases must meet stringent conservation and security standards without sacrificing visibility. Recognizing a gap in the North American market for high-design, locally manufactured showcases, we expanded our expertise into luxury retail and jewellery showcases.
In 2024, we unified our divisions. This consolidation allows us to leverage our deep technical knowledge of museum-grade environments to benefit retail clients who demand the same level of security and elegance. Justin can genuinely say he grew up in the display case industry. His father founded and operated Kooiman Industries Limited for over 40 years, building a strong foundation in store fixtures and display cases. From a young age, Justin spent time in the factory—building sculptures from scrap wood or setting up racetracks for dinky cars.
As he got older, he started on the shop floor, sweeping and cleaning machines, before moving on to processing simple parts and eventually helping build complete displays. Years later, with a background in mechanical engineering and a passion for manufacturing, Justin returned to the industry with a clear goal—to build a display case company of his own, grounded in the same hands-on values he grew up with.
